BUFFALO, NY – Three University at Buffalo football coaches have been named finalists for FootballScoop Coach of the Year awards. Offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki, offensive line coach Scott Fuchs and running backs coach Issac Reed have all been named finalists for the award sponsored by AstroTurf.
Kotelnicki just completed his sixth season as the Bulls' offensive coordinator. In 2020, the Bulls averaged a school-record 478.4 yards of total offense per game. UB ranked second in the nation in rushing offense (287.4 ypg) and fifth in the country in scoring offense (43.5 ppg).
Kotelnicki is a finalist with Jeff Grimes/Aaron Roderick (BYU), Phil Longo (North Carolina) and Steve Sarkisian (Alabama).
For the second straight season under Fuchs, the UB offensive line was dominant. Along with blocking for a record-breaking offense, the Bulls allowed only one sack on the season, the fewest in the country. The unit was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award, given to the top offensive line in FBS.
Fuchs joins Josh Henson (Texas A&M), Kyle Flood (Alabama), Rob Sale/DJ Looney (Louisiana) and Greg Studrawa (Ohio State) as a finalist.
Reed had a successful debut as the Bulls' running backs coach. Led by All-American Jaret Patterson, the Bulls rushed for a school-record 287.4 yards per game. Patterson led the nation in rushing yards per game (178.7 ypg) and tied his own school record with 19 rushing touchdowns in only six games. Against Kent State, Patterson rushed for a MAC-record 409 yards and tied an NCAA record with eight touchdowns.
Reed is a finalist with Tony Alford (Ohio State), Charles Huff (Alabama), Robert Gillespie (North Carolina) and Bruce Johnson (Liberty).
Now in their 13th year, the FootballScoop Coach of the Year awards are the only coaching honors where coaches must be nominated by one of their peers in order to receive consideration and where each year's winner is chosen by the prior winners of that award.
Winners will be announced in the coming days and weeks.
