BUFFALO, NY β The University at Buffalo wrestling team went toe-to-toe with 19th-ranked Missouri on Sunday afternoon, but the Tigers ultimately pulled away for the 28-11 win at Alumni Arena.
Derek Spann (133) got the Bulls on the board first with his third straight win by technical fall. After falling behind, 2-1, after the first, the redshirt-junior got a reversal and two four-point nearfalls in the second period to take control of the match. His second four-point nearfall in the third period clinched the tech fall win and gave the Bulls a 5-3 lead in the dual.
Marcus Robinson followed with a 4-3 decision in the 141-lb. match to up the Buffalo advantage to 8-3. Robinson used an escape and takedown in the second period to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead. His riding time point proved to be the difference in the match.
After Missouri tied the dual with a tech fall at 157, Troy Keller put the Bulls back in front with a decision at 165. Keller trailed, 4-2, after the two periods, but was awarded a stall point and got a takedown in the third period. The riding time point gave him the 6-4 win.
The Tigers would win the final four matches, however, to pull away for the victory. Sam Schuyler nearly pulled off an upset at 197. The redshirt-sophomore got a takedown of 22nd-ranked Wyatt Koelling with just over one minute left in the match to take a 4-1 lead. However, Koelling responded with an escape and a takedown to tie the match and then was able to turn and pin Schuyler with just four seconds left on the clock.
"Once again, the fight was there from these guys," head coach John Stutzman said. "This team is progressing. This is a setback we have to learn from."
The Bulls will be back in action next Sunday against George Mason at Alumni Arena.
