BUFFALO, NY – Six former University at Buffalo football players were selected in the XFL Draft that concluded on Wednesday. Quarterback Tyree Jackson, center James O'Hagan, offensive tackle John Kling, defensive end Chuck Harris, punter Jake Schum and defensive tackle Kristjan Sokoli were all picked to play in the newly formed football league.
Jackson was selected in the skill position ninth round by the DC Defenders. The 2018 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year threw for 3,131 yards and 28 touchdowns last year. His 28 touchdowns were second in school history for a single season and his 35 combined passing and rushing touchdowns were the most in program history for a single season. He signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills in May, but was cut prior to the season.
O'Hagan was also selected by the DC Defenders in the offensive line eighth round. O'Hagan was a three-time All-MAC selection after starting 50 games at center for the Bulls. He helped block for a rushing attack that piled up 2,648 yards on the ground in 2018 – the most in UB's FBS era. He signed as a free agent with the New York Giants in May, but did not make the team.
Kling was picked by the New York Guardians in the offensive line seventh round. Since finishing his career at UB in 2015, Kling has been in NFL camps with the Bears, Redskins and Bills and has also played for the Atlanta Legends of the short-lived Alliance of American Football. Kling appeared in 34 games at offensive tackle over his career at UB and was an All-MAC selection in 2015.
Harris was taken by the DC Defenders in the front seven second round. The two-time All-MAC selection was a disruptive force off the edge for the Bulls, leading UB in sacks with six to go along with 40 tackles and seven tackles for loss in 2018. Harris signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bears in May, but was cut prior to the season.
Schum was drafted by the Tampa Bay Vipers. Schum is back in professional football after spending two seasons in the NFL. In 2015, he was the starting punter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was the Green Bay Packers' starting punter in 2016. Schum was the Bulls' starting punter in 2010 and 2011.
Sokoli was the fourth former Bull drafted by the DC Defenders. The former UB defensive tackle spent four seasons in the NFL after getting drafted in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. Sokoli also played for the Colts, Saints and Giants over his career.
The XFL will kick off its inaugural season in February.
