Bulls Have Five-Match Win Streak Snapped by #7 Missouri

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team had its five-match win streak snapped by 7th-ranked Missouri, 28-8, on Thursday night at Alumni Arena. The Bulls went up against a Tiger squad featuring five nationally ranked wrestlers.
The Bulls fought hard, especially at the lower weights. Justin Patrick nearly pulled the upset over #14 Barlow McGhee at 125. However, Patrick's takedown that would have given him a one-point win, was determined to come just after the final horn and McGhee held on for the 3-2 decision.
Bryan Lantry followed with a close 8-5 decision loss to #12 John Erneste at 133. Colt Cotten lost an 8-3 decision to #4 Lavion Mayes at 149 and Alex Smythe lost a 7-4 decision to Phyllip DeLoach.
The Bulls got on the board compliments of Brett Perry at 184. UB's redshirt-sophomore trailed 1-0 entering the third period before registering a takedown with just 10 seconds left on the clock to earn the 2-1 decision. It was Perry's third straight dual match victory.
Nate Rose followed with a dominant performance at 197. The redshirt-freshman needed only 4:57 to earn a 17-0 technical fall over Jayden Bears. Bears was wrestling in place of two-time national champion and Olympic bronze medalist J'den Cox who was given the night off.
"I'm disappointed, but not disappointed," head coach John Stutzman said. "I know we're not far off. They're a nationally ranked team for a reason. They're well coached and I have to give those guys a lot of credit. We've got to get better, and we have 60 days to do it."
The loss drops the Bulls to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the MAC. They will next wrestle at Old Dominion next Friday.
