Bulls Compete at Mason Invite

FAIRFAX, VA – The University at Buffalo women's rowing team competed at the Mason Invite on the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax, VA on Sunday. Along with the Bulls, George Mason hosted Eastern Michigan, George Washington, Duquesne and Delaware.
As part of the Mason Invite, Buffalo and Eastern Michigan battled for the annual Harvey Cup during the morning session. The Eagles edged the Bulls by only two seconds in the Varsity 8 race to take home the cup for the second straight season. Finishing with a time of 6:57.2, UB's Varsity 8 boat was comprised of Courtney Donovan, Samantha Paige, Tracey Zajac, Meghan O'Brien, Erin O'Connell, Mackenzie Turpin, Juliana Gomez, Sophie Wisoff and Colleen Patterson.
The Varsity 4 boat of Caeleigh Heavey, Stephanie Busha, Sarah Brill, Ankita Kelkar and Hayley Nieves beat Eastern Michigan by four seconds, finishing with a time of 8:01.6.
Eastern Michigan defeated the Bulls in the Second Varsity 8 race by less than two seconds. UB registered a time of 7:04.1 while the Eagles won the race with a time of 7:02.7. UB's Second Varsity 8 boat was made up of Ally Mayo, Madeline Sheffield, Clare Costello, Erica Tenteromano, Jillian Michael, Maddy Saporito, Elizabeth Shilling, Sarah Butler and Rylee James.
The Third Varsity 8 boat took on Delaware and Duquesne and finished third with a time of 8:06.7. The boat consisted of Melissa Stein, Sara Jakiel, Lindsey Carlsen, Alexa Hillis, Paige Krohn, Emma Napper, Joy Ene, Ellie Bortiatynski and Caterina Arnautova.
In the final race of the morning session, the Bulls went up against Delware and Duquesne in the Novice 8 race. The Bulls boat of Janelle Arza, Leia Smith, Briana Kelly, Veronica Czarnik, Lauren Heinzinger, Anna Shugayev, Dannielle Kwong, Victoria Nehls and Dania Abul-Enin finished third in a tight race with a time of 7:30.6.
In the afternoon, the Bulls faced George Washington in three races. The Colonials defeated the Bulls in the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 races.
Like the morning, the Bulls battled Delaware and Duquesne in the Third Varsity 8 and Novice 8 races in the afternoon. Buffalo came in second in the Novice 8 race, finishing eight seconds ahead of Duquesne. The Bulls finished third in the Third Varsity 8 race.
The Bulls will next compete at the Eastern Sprints in Camden, NJ on May 1.
