Bulls Battle Elements at the Knecht Cup

WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, NJ – The University at Buffalo women's rowing team competed against not only tough opponents, but equally difficult conditions at the Knecht Cup on New Jersey's Mercer Lake over the weekend.
Battling through wintry conditions, the Bulls had a pair of boats advance to Sunday's semifinals. The Varsity 8 and the Novice 4 boats both posted times good enough to advance to Sunday.
In the Varsity 8 race, the UB boat of Courtney Donovan, Samantha Paige, Tracey Zajac, Meghan O'Brien, Erin O'Connell, Mackenzie Turpin, Rylee James, Sophie Wisoff and Colleen Patterson finished with a time of 7:34.01 in their heat on Saturday to advance to the semifinals. On Sunday, they greatly improved on their time, finishing at 7:13.19 for seventh place.
The Novice 4 boat finished third in their heat on Saturday with a time of 9:25.06. Made up of Madison Fives, Leia Smith, Anna Shugayev, Veronica Czarnik and Briana Kelly, the team improved by nearly 14 seconds, finishing with a time of 9:11.19 in the semifinals, good for fifth place.
Elsewhere, the Varsity 4 boat of Caeleigh Heavey, Stephanie Busha, Sarah Brill, Ankita Kelkar and Hayley Nieves finished fourth in their heat on Saturday with a time of 8:28.91.
The Second Varsity 4 boat of Melissa Stein, Joy Ene, Emma Napper, Alexa Hillis and Dannielle Kwong finished sixth in their opening heat with a time of 9:01.63.
Both the Second and Third Varsity 8 boats finished fifth in their respective heats.
Consisting of Ally Mayo, Erica Tenteromano, Madeline Sheffield, Elizabeth Shilling, Allyssa Cotten, Jillian Michael, Sarah Butler, Juliana Gomez and Clare Costello, the Second Varsity 8 boat finished with a time of 8:08.05.
The Third Varsity 8 boat of Marissa Scaduto, Caterina Arnautova, Anna Sviripa, Ellie Bortiatynski, Lindsey Carlsen, Lauren Heinzinger, Paige Krohn, Dania Abul-Enin and Victoria Nehls posted a time of 7:54.77.
The Bulls will next compete at the Mason Invite in Fairfax, VA on Saturday.
