ANNAPOLIS, MD - The University at Buffalo baseball team saw their two-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday afternoon on the road at Navy, falling 6-2 at Max Bishop Stadium. With the loss, the Bulls drop to 5-7 on the season while Navy improved to 11-4-1.
After a scoreless first inning of action, the Bulls were able to take the early 1-0 lead in the second inning as Mike Abrunzo opened the inning with a double down the left field line before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Chris Kwitzer then dug in and hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Abrunzo from third.
Making his first career start for the Bulls, Shawn Dubin cruised through the first two innings and the Bulls were able to snag the 2-0 advantage in the third inning. Alex Thrower opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Vinny Mallaro notched an infield single to move Thrower to third. Abrunzo then poked a single through the left side of the infield to give UB the 2-0 lead.
Dubin began to struggle in the bottom of the third inning as he allowed the Midshipmen to tie the game at two as Travis Blue notched a two-RBI double to left field. Dubin was then replaced on the mound in the fourth by Brandon Mumaw.
Navy added one run in the fourth inning to take the 3-2 lead and they never looked back, leading the rest of the way. In the fifth inning, the Midshipmen added three runs to take the dominant 6-2 edge and they held on for their 11th win of the season.
Offensively the Bulls were led by Abrunzo who went 2-for-4 at the plate with a RBI and run while Andrew Taft went 2-for-3 with a walk while earning the start at first base. Chris Kwitzer went 0-for-2 at the dish but did collect his eighth RBI of the season, tying him with Taft and Mallaro for the team lead.
Dubin finished his first career start going three innings while allowing two runs and two hits. Mumaw took the loss in relief as he is now 1-3 overall on the season. Logan Harasta gave the Bulls a chance as he finished the game with three hitless innings while striking out three Navy batters.
The Bulls return to the diamond on Friday at 3:00 pm as they head to Boston, MA to take on the Northeastern Huskies. Junior Alec Tuohy will take the mound for the Bulls in game one of a three-game set with the Huskies.
