BOSTON, MA - Despite allowing just three hits through 12 innings, the University at Buffalo baseball team was defeated on Friday afternoon by Northeastern by the score of 1-0. The UB pitchers shined on Friday as they struck out 13 Huskies as UB falls to 5-8 on the year.
The Story of the game was the UB pitching staff as junior Alec Tuohy took the nod on the mound and pitched the best game of his career. Tuohy was nearly perfec on Friday as he went seven innings while allowing just two hits and striking out a career-high seven batters. Logan Harasta then contributed two hitless innings before closer Mike Kaelin came in and pitched the final 2.2 innings. The Bulls pitching staff combined to strike out 13 batters while falling in extra innings for the second time this season.
The game was won in the 12th inning as the Huskies Cam Walsh earned a walk to open the inning and then stole second base. After a pair of Kaelin strikeouts gave the Bulls two outs in the inning, Zach Perry singled up the middle to score Walsh from second and give Northeastern their eighth win of the season.
The Bulls finished the game with just five hits as Mike Abrunzo and Chris Kwitzer collected singles in the first and second innings, respectively but were left on base. The Bulls bats went cold over the next five innings as they went 1-2-3 in each inning. In the eighth inning, Ben Vey earned an infield single before getting stranded on second base as Alex Thrower grounded out to short.
Vinny Mallaro opened the 10th inning with his team-leading fifth double of the season down the left field line but the Bulls couldn't get him around to score as the next three batters went down in order.
Five different UB players had hits in the game as Brian Dudek collected a single to center field in the 12th inning after pinch running for Mallaro in the 10th. With the potential winning run on base in the 12th, the Bulls grounded into an inning ending double play and watched the Huskies score in the bottom half of the inning to earn the win.
The Bulls and Huskies will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon at 1pm for the second game of their three-game series. Charlie Sobieraski (2-1, 7.06 ERA) will take the mound for the Bulls.
