
Nick Rodriguez Breaks One-Meter Dive Record, Bulls Crush Red Hawks in MAC Opener

BUFFALO, NY- The UB men's swimming and diving team built upon their win over Niagara on Friday by blowing out MAC opponent Miami (OH) 230.5-76.5. In the process to winning their first conference meet of the year, Nick Rodriguez broke the school's one-meter diving record (duals) and earned nine team points with a score of 359.85. Dan Roche and Derek Linebaugh finished second and third in the same event picking up seven combined with scores of 330.23 and 312.15, respectively.
In the pool the Bulls won all 14 events in the pool with them also sweeping the top-three placements in seven of the individual events.
Billy Patrum won the 200 yard butterfly in a time of 1:51.76 and finished the day by winning the 200 yard IM. He improved his season-best time in the IM by more than a second by swimming the race in 1:55.05. Adding to his two first-place finishes, Patrum placed second in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:39.73. In the 200 yard IM Garrett Clarke and Charles Barry finished second and third as well.
Clarke finished first in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:03.64. He also finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke.
Reid Zyniecki raced to a second-place finish in the 1,000 yard freestyle and a first-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle with times of 9:32.91 and 4:38.59, respectively. His time in the 1,000 yard freestyle race was his best time of the 2015-16 season.
Itai De La Vega had a strong day for UB by finishing first place in the 100 yard breaststroke and was on the winning relay team in the 200 yard medley relay. Bill Caffee finished third in three events, 1000 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, and the 200 IM where he was swimming in exhibition.
Mason Miller edged out Aaron Durrence by .01 seconds to win the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.20. Durrence won the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 46.23 with Antonio Lanzi and Martin Leigh placing second and third.
UB's women's and diving team will be home on January 23 when they face Ohio in MAC play, while the men's team returns to action when they travel to Ohio St. for a quad meet on January 30. At the meet the Bulls will face top Big 10 teams in the nation in Michigan, West Virginia, and the Buckeyes.
