
Late Rally Not Enough For Men's Soccer; Fall 2-1 To Lafayette

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York men's soccer team's (3-4-1, 0-0-0 MAC) second half rally fell just short on Friday night at UB Stadium as they dropped their fourth straight match, 2-1, to Lafayette. Russell Cicerone scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 85th minute but UB was not able to notch the game-tying goal.

 - The Short Story: Russell Cicerone scored in the 85th minute off of a scrum in the front of the net but the Bulls were not able to net the equalizer in the final five minutes, losing 2-1 to Lafayette. The Bulls held the 14-9 edge in shots for the match but a pair of posts denied UB of the equalizing goal.

How It Happened
- After some back-and-forth play through the opening part of the match, senior Marcus Hanson rang a hard shot off the cross bar in the 10th minute. The Lafayette defense was able to clear the ball away to keep the game knotted, 0-0.
 - In the 16th minute, Lafayette had their best chance of the half as Nate Arronson sent a corner kick into the box where Greg Biggiani's shot went just wide of the corner of the net.
 - Lafayette was able to get on the board first in the 23rd minute as Todd Forrester sent a ball across to Nate Arronson who was all alone in front and beat the UB keeper to the low right corner of the net.
 - The Bulls fought back and had a good chance in the 35th minute as Daniel Cramarossa got free and fired a hard low shot on goal that was turned away by the Lafayette keeper.
 - UB had another brilliant chance to knot the game in the 39th minute as Russell Cicerone sent a cross into the box where Nicolay Netskar's header was bounced just over the cross bar.
 - The Bulls came out strong in the second half as Russell Cicerone was dragged down in the box, giving UB a penalty kick. On the ensuing penalty kick, Russell Cicerone completely fooled the Lafayette keeper but his hard shot rang off the left goal post and out of harm's way.
 - A couple minutes later, Lafayette was able to counter on a UB scoring chance with a 2-on-1 the other way. Alec Fisher was the lone UB defender back and he made a great play to pressure the ball and force an errant pass to prevent a scoring chance.
 - After the strong defensive play from Fisher, the Bulls offense produced three good chances as Marcus Hanson had a shot from distance turned away by the keeper. Alec Fisher then had his low hard attempt to a wide open goal blocked by a defender and Russell Cicerone saw his free kick just miss the top corner of the net.
 - The Leopards notched their second goal of the game in the 79th minute as Ryan Egan took a Todd Forrester pass and beat Cameron Hogg to the low right corner.
 - Trailing by two, the Bulls continued to be aggressive and they were rewarded in the 85th minute as Russell Cicerone took a feed from Steven Stryker and beat the keeper to the right corner for his fourth of the season.
 - Russell Cicerone had the Bulls final chance at tying the game at two in the 89th minute but his hard shot just missed the upper right corner of the net.
 
Inside The Numbers
- With his goal tonight, UB junior Russell Cicerone moved into sole possession of eighth place on the all-time scoring list with 20 career goals. Cicerone is within two goals of fifth on the all-time list.
 - Steven Stryker recorded his third assist of the season on Cicerone's tally, giving him a career-high for assists through only eight matches.
 - The Bulls held the 14-9 edge in shots as well as the 6-4 lead in corner kicks for the match.
 - Russell Cicerone led all players with a season-high seven shot effort in the loss.
 - Marcus Hanson and Daniel Cramarossa each finished with two shots.
 - The loss was UB's first loss at home on the year. The Bulls are now 3-1 at UB Stadium.
