BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York baseball team (13-27, 6-14 MAC) was denied a series clinching victory on Saturday afternoon against the visiting Kent State Golden Flashes as the visitors pulled out the decisive 10-2 victory at Amherst Audobon Field. The win for Kent State sets up a rubber match game three on Sunday afternoon on Senior Day for the Bulls.
After striking out a pair in the opening inning, UB starter Anthony Magovney allowed a solo home run to Conner Simonetti to start off the second inning and give the Golden Flashes the early 1-0 lead. After the homer, Magovney settled in and struck out five batters through three innings.
Kent State was able to get to Magovney in the fourth inning as they recorded two hits and two runs to take the 3-0 lead. The Bulls responded in the bottom half of the inning with their first run of the contest as Chris Kwitzer ripped his team-leading fifth triple of the season to the wall in right center field. Kwitzer then came in to score in the next at bat as Vinny Mallaro singled to center field for his 22nd RBI of the season.
The Golden Flashes struck for another run in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh inning as Zarley Zalewski hit a two-run homer over the right field fence, giving Kent State the 6-1 lead.
UB produced their second run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning as Justin Gonzalez and Nick Sinay hit back-to-back singles and then moved up a base each on a wild pitch. Shortstop Bobby Sheppard then dug in and hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Gonzalez from third, making the score 6-2. UB was not able to score another run the rest of the way.
Kent State was able to put the game out of reach in the ninth as they notched four more runs in the inning.
Magovney finished off his final start at Amherst Audobon Field with seven innings pitched and a season-high nine strikeouts while allowing eight hits and three earned runs in the loss.
