
Baseball Losses Slugfest At Ball State On Sunday, 16-8

MUNCIE, IN – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York baseball team (6-14, 2-4 MAC) dropped their rubber match against Ball State on Sunday afternoon on the road by the score of 16-8. For the second straight weekend, the Bulls lost a MAC series, 2-1. The win gives Ball State a record of 18-8 overall and a 5-1 MAC record.
The Bulls offense did their part on Sunday afternoon as they racked up eight runs for the third time in the last four games. UB had three players, Ben Haefner, Bobby Sheppard and Mike Abrunzo, record two hits on the day and two players, Haefner and Abrunzo, record two RBI's each.
After a quick first inning from starter Mike McGee, the Cardinals offense got rolling in the second inning as they were able to tag McGee with eight runs. The Cardinals offense recorded five hits and scored eight runs in the inning as McGee was replaced by Alec Tuohy before the second inning was over.
The Bulls offense responded with a pair of runs in the third inning to make the score 8-2 after Justin Gonzalez and Nick Sinay worked back-to-back walks to start the inning and Haefner ripped a double to score both. With his walk in the third, Sinay has now reached base in 18 of 20 games this season for the Bulls.
Ball State responded in the third with a run of their own and then over the next three innings the Cardinals outscored the Bulls 6-0 to take the commanding 15-2 lead.
As the seventh inning hit, the Bulls offense awoke as they were able to cross six runs across home plate to get back into the game. Gonzalez walked to start the inning and Sinay singled to give the Bulls two runners on. The single for Sinay gave him a season-best seven game hit streak, the longest hit streak on the team this season.
Brian Dudek then pinch hit for Haefner and ripped a double to left field to score Gonzalez and move Sinay to third. Sheppard then recorded an infield single to score Sinay and Chris Kwitzer singled to left field to load the bases for the Bulls. Abrunzo stepped to the plate and hit a single to score a pair of Bulls and then Ben Vey singled to score another run, making the score 15-8 in favor of the Cardinals.
The Cardinals tacked on a run in the bottom half of the seventh and the two sides went scoreless in the final two innings as Ball State won 16-8.
Abrunzo finished with a team-best two RBI's in the loss, his team-leading third multi-RBI game this season for UB. After going 2-for-4 today, Sheppard now ranks second on the team with five multi-hit games in his first season with the Bulls.
UB will return to the diamond on Tuesday as they will play a doubleheader against Big Four foe St. Bonaventure in Olean, NY. Game one will begin at 2:00 pm followed by the second game.
