BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo, the State University of New York senior tight end Matt Weiser was named to the Academic All-America First Team on Thursday, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced. He is the first football player in the Bulls FBS era (since 1999) to earn the honor.
"This means a lot," Weiser said. "Growing up, my parents really stressed the importance of school with sports. They were always stricter on me than the school was. To be able to get a degree from UB; to be able to play football here and now receive this, it's a blessing and an honor that all the hard work is paying off."
Weiser, a communication major with a 3.49 grade point average, had a breakout season for the Bulls. The Womelsdorf, PA native had 63 receptions for 625 yards and three touchdowns on the year. He shattered the single-season school record for receptions and receiving yards by a tight end. In addition, his 63 catches tied for eighth in school history for a single season.
Weiser ranks second among all tight ends nationally in receptions and receiving yards. He had the best game by a tight end in school history against Nevada on September 26 with a career-high 10 catches for 131 yards and a touchdown. It was the most receptions and receiving yards by a tight end in school history. He was named the John Mackey Award Tight End of the Week following the game.
"I'm incredibly proud of Matt for this accomplishment," head coach Lance Leipold said. "He has been an outstanding representative of our football program both on the field and in the classroom and is a great example to all of our players."
Weiser is the fifth UB football player to be named an Academic All-American. He joins Gerry Philbin (1963), Gerry Quinlivan (1984), James Dunbar (1985 & 1986) and Dan Poulsen (1998).
