SAN DIEGO, CA – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team (0-2-0) was denied their first win of the 2014 season on Sunday afternoon at San Diego State as they were defeated by the score of 1-0.
"It's a very difficult result to accept as I felt we were the better team over the 90 minutes," stated head coach Stu Riddle. "Ultimately a lack of communication and poor finishing cost us the game, both of which must improve quickly as we face two good teams at home next weekend in Bryant and Bucknell."
The Bulls started out quick in their second game of a west coast road trip as they recorded the first three shots of the contest through nine minutes of action. The Bulls best chance early on came off the head of Austin Place. Place headed a perfect corner from Marcus Hanson off the cross bar as the Aztecs survived the early scare. Moments later Dylan Cope had a shot go just high and Hanson sent one just wide, keeping the game scoreless early on.
The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the half, as neither squad was able to break through with a goal. The Bulls held the 5-2 advantage in shots and 4-3 advantage in corners after 45 minutes of play.
Waleed Cassis, making his first start of the season, was asked to make a great save early on in the second half for UB and he was up to that test. Just 30 seconds into the half Forrayah Bass got free for the shot but Cassis was there for the save.
The Aztecs were able to get on the board in the 73rd minute after a Alec Fisher shot went just wide of the San Diego State goal. Bass got free in the box for the Aztecs and ripped a shot in the lower left side of the goal to give the home team the eventual game-winning tally.
In the 81st minute, the Bulls had their best chance to tie the game up as Ryan Pereira had his hard header saved by Adam Allmaras to preserve his shutout.
For the game, Cassis made two saves while Hanson led all UB players with three shots. Shots were knotted at nine apiece and the Bulls held the 8-6 advantage in corner kicks for the match.
The Bulls will return home on Friday, September 5 for their home opener as they play host to the Bryant Bulldogs at UB Stadium at 7:00 pm.
