SAN DIEGO, CA - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team (0-1-0) opened up their 2014 campaign with a stiff test on the road in San Diego and they were defeated 4-1. The Bulls held the lead at halftime but they were not able to hold on in the second half.
"After a wonderful first half performance, we showed our naivety and inexperience in the second half and we were rightfully punished," stated head coach Stu Riddle. "To concede two goals in 30 seconds to open the second half was the killer blow and we never recovered."
The Bulls started out the season on a high note in the 14th minute as Braden Culver gave UB the 1-0 lead. Culver buried the ball in the back of the net after a perfectly placed free kick ball from Marcus Hanson.
The Bulls held on strong the rest of the first half as they entered the locker room with the 1-0 lead. Freshman goalkeeper Cameron Hogg was able to push away the Toreros only shot on goal in the first half.
San Diego jumped on the Bulls early in the second half as Dave Musambi notched the game-tying goal on the header in the 46th minute. Just 40 seconds later, the Bulls were called for a handball in the box and the Toreros were awarded a penalty kick which they converted on to take the 2-1 lead.
In the 82nd minute, San Diego was able to put the game away as Michael Turner scored on a breakaway to make the score 3-1 in favor of the home squad. In the final minute of action, the Toreros scored again off of a header, giving them the 4-1 victory.
For the game, Hogg recorded eight saves while the two San Diego goalkeepers were only asked to save two shots combined. The Toreros held the 24-4 advantage in shots for the game along with the 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bulls will return to action on Sunday at 3:00 pm as they will travel to take on San Diego State.
