BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team closed out a very impressive exhibition season on Saturday night at UB Stadium with a decisive 2-0 victory over Rochester. The Bulls did not allow a goal over their three game exhibition slate.
"We have to give credit to Rochester who were an excellent opponent tonight and made life very difficult for us," said second-year head coach Stu Riddle. "I am pleased that we have been able to get through pre season with three good results and we will look to continue that momentum into the opening weekend in San Diego."
After a back and forth opening 45 minutes of action, the Bulls offense began to click early on in the second half as Austin Place was able to find the back of the net for his first goal of the game. In the 48th minute, Marcus Hanson crossed a perfect ball into the box where Fox Slotemaker was able to head the ball to a open Place who buried the ball in the back of the net.
Five minutes later, Place made the score 2-0 in favor of the home team as he found himself in the same place as his first goal and he found the back of the net once again. Russell Cicerone started the play with a nice ball off the free kick which Slotemaker was able to head over to Place once again for his second tally.
The YellowJackets had their best chance of the opening half denied by freshman goalkeeper Cameron Hogg as Jeff Greblick was in all alone. Greblick took a feed and was in free on Hogg but the right foot of the freshman blocked the ball out of bounds to preserve the scoreless first half.
With the score 1-0 in favor of the Bulls, Waleed Cassis was asked to make a big save to maintain the lead and he did so. In the 50th minute, Nick Pastore took a hard low shot that Cassis was able to get a foot on and force wide.
For the contest, the YellowJackets outshot the Bulls 17-5 and they also held the 14-3 advantage in corner kicks. Hogg made three saves in the opening 45 minutes while Cassis made four saves in the final 45 minutes for the Bulls.
The Bulls will open their 2014 regular season next weekend as they will travel to take on San Diego on Aug. 29 at 7:00 pm. The Bulls will then play at San Diego State on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 12:00 pm.
