BATAVIA, NY - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team opened up their 2014 campaign with an impressive 7-0 victory over Genesee Community College in the Bulls season opening exhibition match played Sunday afternoon in Batavia. UB had six different players record at least one goal for the game.
"I was pleased with the overall showing today," stated second year head coach Stu Riddle. "The fact that we were able to get 22 players at least 45 minutes of action is very important at this stage of the year. As always there is an awful lot of work to be done and we will look to continue to make the young group a better team before Wednesday's match against Seton Hill at All-High Stadium."
Freshman Zack Compton opened the scoring for the Bulls in the 12th minute as he headed home a perfectly placed cross from Marcus Hanson. UB dominated most of play through the first half and they were rewarded with their second goal of the afternoon off the foot of Dylan Cope. Cope received another great cross from Hanson and deposited it in the back of the net.
The second half opened up with the Bulls cashing in on three opportunities in the first 13 minutes of the half, making the score 5-0 in favor of the visitors. Charlie Norman notched a nice goal off of a Nicolai Berry corner ball and then freshman Abdulla Al-Kalisy netted back-to-back goals on solo runs through the Cougars defense.
The Bulls offense continued to click later in the second half as Braden Scales buried a rebound goal following a great save by the Cougars goalkeeper off the head of Norman. Last year's Mid-American Conference Newcomer of the Year, Russell Cicerone got into the scoring action in the 72nd minute after a hand ball in the box gave him a penalty kick, which he converted with ease.
UB will return to action with their second exhibition match of the season on Wednesday night at 5:00 pm as they will take on Seton Hill at All-High Stadium behind Bennett High School in Buffalo. All-High Stadium is located at 2885 Main St., Buffalo, NY 14214.
