BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo Athletics Department announced on Thursday afternoon a new radio partnership with ESPN 1520 AM to broadcast football and men's and women's basketball games as well as other programming surrounding UB Athletics beginning in August, 2014.
ESPN 1520, a 50,000-watt station, has one of the strongest signals in the nation. At night, the station can be heard from New England to South Carolina and through out the entire state of New York. Owned by the Entercom Communications Corporation, ESPN 1520 is home to such popular national radio shows as Mike and Mike in the Morning, The Herd with Colin Cowherd and SVP and Rusillo.
The partnership will also enable a cross promotion of UB athletics across other Entercom-owned stations, including WGR 550, 930 WBEN, Kiss 98.5 and Star 102.5.
"We are thrilled to be partnering with ESPN 1520," UB Director of Athletics Danny White said. "To have UB Athletics broadcasted over the airwaves of one of the most powerful stations on the East Coast will further help us enhance our brand and reach a very large fan base across the state of New York as well as our extensive alumni base on the Eastern seaboard."
ESPN 1520 will be the flagship station of the UB Bulls Radio Network. UB games will also air on 1280 WHTK in Rochester as well as select games on 570 WMCA in New York City and 104.5 The Team in Albany. For the first time in school history, UB Athletics will have a radio network that spans across the entire Empire State.
In addition to football and men's and women's basketball games airing on ESPN 1520, the station will also broadcast a weekly 30-minute show with football head coach Jeff Quinn, as well as men's and women's basketball head coaches Bobby Hurley and Felisha Legette-Jack.
"We found out with a lot of research that Buffalo has an insatiable appetite for sports and that is why we launched ESPN 1520 last September," said Entercom Vice President/General Manager Greg Ried. "One of the purposes of that station were to provide a better outlet for local collegiate sports in Western New York and to get out the message of what is going on. Everyone is taking notice that things are happening here at UB and we are excited to be a part of it and excited to put the ESPN brand in the same line as the UB brand."
ESPN 1520 is one of nearly 400 ESPN Radio affiliates across North America. The move continues an increased presence on the ESPN family of networks for UB. Last season, the Bulls had 11 of their 13 games televised on one of the ESPN platforms and this year UB will welcome ESPN into their building for the first time with a Friday night matchup against Baylor. The Bulls already have six games slated for broadcast on one of the ESPN networks with nearly half of the schedule's broadcast information yet to be announced.
The football season kicks off against Duquesne on August 30 at UB Stadium at 3:30 pm. The Bulls will host four of their first five games, including the nationally-televised matchup vs. Big 12 Champion Baylor on Sep. 12 at 8:00 pm. UB will also host games against Norfolk St. (9/20) and Miami (OH) (9/27) before playing two straight away from home. The Bulls return home for three of their next four at UB Stadium beginning with Central Michigan (10/25) and continuing with mid-week games against Akron (11/11) and Kent State (11/18). Join the Tailgate Concert Series, which begins 90 minutes before kickoff.
