BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling program will send 12 members of its current team to the 2014 University National Freestyle Championships, being held on the Akron University campus at the Louis and Fred Stile Athletic Field House from May 23-25.
"This is another important event for us as we continue to build our program among the nation's best," stated second year head coach John Stutzman. "This is a great opportunity for our guys to go out and compete for a national title and hopefully earn a spot on Team USA."
The three-day freestyle championship is open to athletes between the ages of 17-28 from around the country. Each athlete will have a chance to advance to the 2014 University World Championships in Hungary in July if they are able to win their respective weight class. The top-eight finishers from each weight class will also be recognized as All-Americans.
Current Bulls who have their sights set on qualifying for the World Championships are Max Soria (57KG), Cory Hollister (57KG), Jason Estevez (61KG), Ryan Todora (65KG), Rrok Ndokaj (74KG), Ryan Therrien (74KG), Tyler Rill (80KG), Austin Weigel (80KG), Joe Ariola (86KG), Jarred Lux (86KG), Tony Lock (86KG) and James Benjamin (97KG).
"This event allows us to see firsthand the gains we are making and it gives the coaching staff a clear indication of the things we need to continue to work on heading into the summer," stated Stutzman.
