ATHENS, OH - The UB baseball team opened up its final road trip of the 2014 in Athens Friday evening, taking on Ohio. The Bobcats would strike for 13 hits to take the opening game, 4-3. Kevin Hughes gave up three earned runs but took the loss, and Matt Pollock went 3-4 and came just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.

The loss moves Buffalo to 20-17 overall and 11-7 in the Mid-American Conference. Ohio is now 9-32, 5-14 in the MAC.

The Bobcats would take a quick 4-0 lead after the first three innings after the Bulls would allow eight hits and committed two errors. Pollock would help generate the team's first run of the game in the fourth inning, leading off with a triple to center field before coming home on a sacrifice fly from Mike Burke. The senior left fielder would again factor in with the team's second run that came in the sixth, as his one-out double to center set up an RBI single by Tyler Mautner to make it a 4-2 game.

The bottom of the UB order would account for the team's final run, which would come in the seventh. A one-out walk by Brian Dudek, a single from Mike Scarcello and a walk to Jimmy Topps loaded the bases, but an RBI single from Nick Sinay would be all that would come of it in the team's best chance of the day. In the ninth, Topps would draw a one-out walk, but nothing more would come of it.

Hughes would take the loss but settled down after allowing the early offense. He would go seven innings in the game, striking out five and walking a pair. He gave up 12 hits and allowed all four runs. Cory Folk threw a scoreless eighth inning of relief.

The offense would record just six hits, with Pollock serving as the only Bull with more than one on the day. The five through nine batters in the lineup went just 1-16.

Anthony Magovney will take the ball tomorrow evening hoping to keep the team in contention for a series victory. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm at Bob Wren Stadium.
