BUFFALO, NY – New University at Buffalo, the State University of New York head football coach Lance Leipold led Wisconsin-Whitewater to its sixth Division III national championship in eight years when the Warhawks defeated Mt. Union, 43-34, in Stagg Bowl XLII in Salem, VA on Friday night. It was the final game for the legendary coach at UWW as he now begins a new chapter as UB's head coach.
The Warhawks led the game from wire-to-wire. They rolled up 552 yards of total offense, passing for 365 yards and rushing for 187. Many considered Whitewater an underdog heading into the game as Mount Union led the nation in scoring offense, averaging 60.3 points per game and second in scoring defense, allowing only 9.3 points per game. However, the Warhawks controlled the line of scrimmage all night and held a 40:20-19:40 advantage in time of possession.
Leipold finished his career at Wisconsin-Whitewater with a 109-6 record and the same number of national championships – six – as losses. Three of his six losses came during the 2012 season and he had five perfect 15-0 campaigns. He'll leave UWW with the Warhawks on a 32-game winning streak – the longest current winning streak at any level. Earlier this season, he became the fastest coach to reach 100 career wins in NCAA history.
Leipold will now start full time at UB and begin to prepare the Bulls for the 2015 season.
