DAYTON, OH - Looking for its third straight win of the weekend, the UB baseball team stumbled on defense against Oakland, committing a season-high five errors in the game. The Grizzlies (3-10) scored seven runs in the middle innings to earn an 8-3 win over Buffalo (9-9) as the Flyer Classic tournament resumed play at the University of Dayton.
The Bulls scored a lone run in the first inning off some big bats with two outs. Alex Baldock tripled over the center fielder's head with two outs to get the team started, and Tyler Mautner split the right center field gap to let Baldock trot home. Oakland would be held off the scoreboard until the fourth inning, when the fielding issues began.
With two outs in the fourth, the game would be tied after a two-out triple ended up scoring the runner after a UB error. Then in the fifth, the Bulls were unable to convert on a possible double-play chance, and three Oakland runs would cross the plate on two hits. Buffalo would score a run in the fifth despite not recording a hit thanks to fielding issues from its opponent, but three more runs would come against UB in the sixth, as the Bulls committed two more errors.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Bulls would make a rally down 8-2. Justin Gonzalez came in as a pinch hitter and led off with a double, and he would move over to third on a single by Nick Sinay. River McWilliams would roll into a double play that would score Gonzalez but put a damper on the inning, as it would ultimately be the only run the team would score.
Mike Burke took his first loss of the season after allowing seven runs (five earned) in six innings pitched. The bullpen was again solid for the Bulls, as Tyler Wilson and Mike Kaelin finished out the final three innings allowing just an unearned run and striking out three and allowing three hits.
Buffalo's busy week will come to a close tomorrow, as it will play against the host Flyers. First pitch is scheduled for 11 am.
