Each week the voice of UB Football, Paul Peck, will preview Buffalo's upcoming game in his "Bull Session." The play-by-play veteran breaks down this week's opponent Morgan State.
Buffalo vs. Morgan State
First, a word about the loss at Georgia. At one point near halftime, you could sense the 92,446 Bulldog fans wondering "who are these guys?" That's the ultimate compliment to the Bulls, and that's why it was a successful trip to the SEC. Three drives of 75 yards or more tells you that the team held up well against the powerful, 6th ranked Dawgs. The players should be proud of how they played, Bulls fans should be encouraged about what this performance can mean for the rest of the season.
Bullseye on: Buffalo Offense
I didn't know what to expect from quarterback Alex Zordich, because we hadn't seen him start in two years. But I think he showed all of us how he's matured and grown as a quarterback. He played in control, made good decisions, did not turn the ball over and led those three long drives. His ability to run, and his sense to know when to run, will be a valuable weapon for this offense all season long….. On his first 16 carries, Brandon Oliver had just 29 yards rushing. But Bo never gives up and never quits, and his 17th run was a 36 yarder that keyed the offensive success at the end of the half….Running for 111 yards against an SEC team will keep Oliver on those postseason award watch lists, and keep those voters watching…I thought James Potts ran strong on his limited carries, and it was a nice surprise to see freshman Devin Campbell play when the Bulls used two backs in the shotgun…Tight ends Alex Dennison and Jimmy Gordon let all of us know the position is alive and well. They will be key weapons for Zordich all season long…For the second straight week, the Bulls offense faces a 3-4 defense. Morgan State switched this year…Last week, it was 358 pound nose tackle John Jenkins of Georgia. This week, it's 340 pound Bears NT Damarco Bisbee. Center Trevor Sales will have another full day...The Bears feature two very good cornerbacks in Joe Rankin and Kenneth Ridley. They will test Alex Neutz and the receivers. It's a good matchup to watch on Saturday.
Bullseye on: Buffalo Defense
I'm anxious to see the season debut of Khalil Mack. Mostly anxious to see how new defensive coordinator Lou Tepper will move him around on the Bulls defense. The key for Mack is getting him away from the double and triple teams he saw last season. That will come if Colby Way, Steve Means and Willie Moseley play as well as they did in Georgia. The offense can't block everyone, and that should free up Khalil…Way just gets better every year. He was outstanding against the big Bulldogs offense line. That's why he earned MAC East Division Defensive Player of the Week…I also thought Isaac Baugh was very good at Georgia, as he settles into his new role as a linebacker….Morgan State has small, but speedy wide receivers, a very good tailback and a talented quarterback…Seth Higgins is that QB, and he's a six-foot-five inch passer with a good arm…The Bears will also sub in backup QB Robert Council, who's more of a runner.
Bullseye on: Physical Football
Jeff Quinn summed up the Georgia game by saying his team played "fast, smart and physical." It's how every coach and fan wants their team to play. It appears physical football will be a signature trait of the Bulls. Even Zordich showed that he'll play a physical style of quarterback.
