MEMPHIS, TN – Former University at Buffalo men's basketball standout Mitchell Watt has officially signed on to play for the Memphis Grizzlies Summer League Team, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Watt is one of 19 players on the roster. The squad will compete in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas at the COX Pavilion and Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas from July 14-22.
The Grizzlies will begin play on Saturday, July 14 at 4 pm (ET) against the New York Knicks. Memphis will also play Washington (July 17), Charlotte (July 20), Phoenix (July 21) and Minnesota (July 22). All five games will air on NBA TV.
The Goodyear, AZ native is just the second UB player to suit up for an NBA team in the Bulls' modern Division I era (since 1991). Mark Bortz played for the Los Angeles Clippers summer league team in 2005.
Watt, the 2012 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, averaged 16.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.2 blocked shots per game last season– all career highs. He ranked in the top four in the conference in five different categories, including scoring (3rd), rebounding (4th), field goal percentage (3rd), blocked shots (2nd) and defensive rebounds (3rd).
He is looking to become the first UB player since Sam Pellom to play a regular season game in the NBA. Pellom spent four seasons in the league between 1979-83, averaging 4.4 points and 3.5 rebounds over 196 games with the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks.
