Playoff Hopes Take A Hit As Bulls Fall To Bowling Green

BUFFALO, NY – After scoring 14 runs in the series opener yesterday, the University at Buffalo baseball team managed just three runs, falling to Bowling Green on Friday afternoon, 6-3. The loss is a big hit to Buffalo's playoff hopes, but is still alive following Akron's 15-2 loss to Kent State this afternoon. Buffalo needs to win tomorrow and have Akron lose to clinch the final spot in the 2012 MAC Tournament.
The Bulls scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second as junior Tom Murphy led off the inning with a double down the left field line. A single from Alex Baldock drove Murphy in to give Buffalo the 1-0 edge.
The Falcons got on the board in the top of the fourth off Buffalo starter Jeff Thompson as they scored a pair of runs to take the lead. However, UB responded in the bottom half of the inning as Murphy led off the frame with a home run to left center field. Baldock followed with a single and was moved to third on a wild pitch and a ground out. He came in to score on a bloop single to right field by Thomas Richards, who was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
The Bulls had regained the lead at 3-2, but Bowling Green came back in the fifth inning with three runs against Thompson, who was a little unlucky since three of the hits never left the infield, including a couple of bunt singles up the third base line. Bowling Green added another run in the eighth inning off the UB bullpen for the 6-3 final score.
Murphy went 2-for-4 with the home run and a double, while Baldock went 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a walk. Thompson allowed 11 hits and five runs in 6.1 innings of work, striking out two. Matt Malewitz picked up the victory for Bowling Green as he pitched 8.1 innings, striking out six.
The Bulls and Falcons will be back at it tomorrow afternoon in the rubber game of the series at 1:00 pm. Prior to first pitch the Bulls will honor their senior class.
