FAIRFAX STATION, VA – The University at Buffalo varsity four boat won the gold medal and the team placed third overall at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Sandy Run Regional Park in Virginia on Sunday.
The varsity four boat of Katherine Evely, Margaret Lawn, Julia Hahn, Katie Coffin and Cornelia Willis won their race by a mere tenth of a second over Boston University. The two boats separated themselves from the pack and exchanged leads five times before the Bulls held off the Terriers for the win. UB finished with a time of 7:47.5. It marked the third time in the past four years the varsity four boat won gold at the CAA Championships.
"I'm proud of the way our varsity four raced," head coach Rudy Wieler said. "They gave us a real boost."
Next was the second varsity eight race where the Bulls finished fourth with a time of 7:14.0. Northeastern won the race with a time of 7:01.4. The second varsity eight boat was made up of Emily Glasgow, Sarah Gallagher, Francisca Strange-Sepulveda, Deborah Garth, Elizabeth Murphy, Justine Bottorff, Rachel Cuthbert, Brittany Davidson and Danielle Carlino.
The final race of the day was between the varsity eight boats. UB's squad of Alison Sheehan, Rosa Kemp, Hannah Miller-Selzer, Jacklyn Postulka, Heidi MacMahon-Manning, Kaitlyn Koscielniak, Shannon David, Sydney Gilchrist and Brittany Ronald finished third with a time of 6:51.3. Overall champion Northeastern also won this race with a time of 6:41.8.
"We were ranked third coming into the race and we finished third," Wieler said. "We did what we were predicted to do. I just think we were all hoping for a little more."
In addition, the CAA announced its all-conference team and a pair of Bulls got the nod. Alison Sheehan and Rosa Kemp were named to the All-CAA squad.
