BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo wrestling team (5-11, 0-1 MAC) will resume its Mid-American Conference schedule Sunday, squaring off against the Ohio Bobcats (2-5, 1-3 MAC) in the third annual Takedown Cancer event. Along with the dual, there will be auctions, raffles and door prizes available to raise money for Carly's Club and The Jeff Parker Foundation. The pre-match events will begin at 11 am, and the dual is scheduled for 1 pm.
For the third straight year, the Buffalo wrestling team joined with the UB Division of Athletics to host Takedown Cancer. Last season, the team raised $28,000 and were able to help out families in need across Western New York. The auctions and raffles will begin before the match, with prizes and gift baskets generously donated by local businesses and restaurants. The prizes have a combined worth of over $9,000. The grand prize raffle will be for two 55" High Definition LCD Element televisions.
In its last time out, the Bulls finished fourth at the New York State Collegiate tournament, hosted by Cornell University. Kevin Smith and Jake Waste each earned individual titles, and with his four wins at the tournament, Smith moved into third place for most career wins, with 117. He now has 48 dual wins as well just three wins away from matching the program's all-time record.
This will be the first conference dual in nearly two months following a loss to Central Michigan on Dec. 10. Since then, the Bulls have rallied with five wins since then and have solidified the starting lineup with strong contributions from true freshmen Blake Roulo and Jake Waste, as well as redshirt freshmen like Max Soria and Wally Maziarz.
The Bobcats dropped both of its recent weekend matches, losing to Kent State 23-9 and Bloomsburg 25-6. While it will be Buffalo's second MAC dual of the season, it will be the conference finale for Ohio, who have a win over Northern Illinois but losses to Central and Eastern Michigan, and Kent State. The Bobcats are led by sophomore heavyweight Jeremy Johnson, who has been not just the team's top wrestler, but also one of the best heavyweights in the nation. He is ranked in the top 10 by nearly every major wrestling publication. Ohio leads the all-time series 12-3, including a 16-15 win last year at home. The last UB win against Ohio came in 2008.
