Craven's OT Goal Sinks Niagara, 2-1

BUFFALO, NY -- Two streaks came to an end on Friday night when the University at Buffalo's Richard Craven scored the game-winning goal two minutes into overtime as UB defeated Niagara, 2-1, at UB Stadium. The goal ended UB's losing streak of four matches and also put to a halt Niagara's six-match unbeaten string.
Craven took a pass from Maksym Kowal in front of the Niagara goal and pushed the shot past goalkeeper Brett Petricek at the 92:01 mark for the winning tally. It was Craven's second marker of the season.
UB (5-4-1) opened the scoring in the second half as freshman Lukas Fedler scored his first career goal on a header in front of the box off a corner kick by Risto Latti in the 61st minute. The goal broke a string of 364 scoreless minutes by the Purple Eagles.
Controversy ensued as Niagara tied the match at 87:10. After UB goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi was called for a foul in the box, Niagara's Carl Haworth was awarded a penalty kick which he converted into his seven goal of the season. After the foul had been called but prior to the penalty kick, Niagara's Roberto Andersson was given a red card, forcing the Purple Eagles (5-2-1) to play a man down for the remainder of the match.
Niagara outshot the Bulls, 16-8. Viscosi and Petricek both stopped five shots.
"It was great to get the monkey off our backs," said interim head coach David Hesch. "We now have momentum going into Duquesne and Northern Illinois."
The Bulls travel to Pittsburgh on Sunday to face the Dukes. UB opens Mid-American Conference at Northern Illinois on October 1.
