DENVER, CO – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team suffered its second consecutive loss on Friday night as the Bulls were downed at Denver, 3-0, at CIBER Field in the first of two matches in the Centennial State.
The Bulls (4-2-1) were outshot by the Pioneers (1-2-2) 27-5, although four of the Bulls' five shots were on goal. Joey Merlo led the squad with two shots on goal while leading scorer Andy Tiedt and Patrick Ryan each were credited with one shot on goal. Four of the five UB shots were taken in the first half. UB goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi picked up five saves in his 90 minutes of action.
Denver scored two goals in the first half. Kellan Christensen scored with 9:59 left in the half from six yards out. With time winding down in the half Christian Volesky added a goal with seven seconds to play. Joe Eubanks added the Pioneers' third goal with less than eight minutes remaining in the match.
Denver was ranked 20th last week in the national poll but fell out of the rankings following a loss at number six Indiana and a tie against number 11 Notre Dame. The Pioneers also dropped a 1-0 decision to top 10 program Creighton earlier in the season.
"Denver was the best team we have seen to date," said interim head coach David Hesch. " We need to play better versus better teams if we want to win the MAC's. We had our chances to score and did play very well at times so we do have some bright spots. We just need to stop giving up soft goals and play better possession soccer."
The Bulls travel to Colorado Springs for a Sunday match at the Air Force Academy. The Bulls and Falcons kick off at 1 pm Eastern Time.
