COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Three quick first half goals in the opening eight minutes doomed the University at Buffalo men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon as the Bulls fell to the Air Force Academy, 6-1, at Cadet Soccer Stadium to complete a two-match weekend in Colorado.
Air Force (5-1) scored three goals in succession against UB starter Jonathan Viscosi. After Viscosi picked up a save on the Falcons' first shot attempt at the 2:49 mark, Garrett Getschow scored for Air Force from 18 yards out at 5:09. Forty-five seconds later, Air Force went up 2-0 with an 18-yard shot by John Melcher. Kevin Durr added Air Force's third goal on a free kick from 20 yards at 7:13. Viscosi finished the first half with seven saves, one shy of his season high.
Sophomore Ryan Aubrey got his first action of the season in relief of Viscosi to open the second half but Air Force continued their assault of the Bulls as Getschow and Melcher scored in the first seven minutes of the second half for a 5-0 edge. Aubrey made three saves in his second-half action.
Andy Tiedt broke the ice for the Bulls with his fourth goal of the season. Tiedt took Patrick Ryan's pass from the corner and netted the goal from 18 yards at 63:43. It was the first goal for UB in 177 minutes when Joey Merlo connected in the second half at Albany in the 2-1 overtime loss to the Great Danes on September 11.
Conor Henry added a goal for Air Force in the 87th minute for the 6-1 final score.
The Bulls (4-3-1) were outshot by the Falcons, 27-9, with a 16-5 Air Force edge on the shots on goal. Maksym Kowal led the Bulls with three shots on goal and four total shots. Tiedt and Risto Latti also had a shot on goal with Tiedt's attempt connecting.
"Air Force was a good team who scored four world class goals while we gave them two," said interim head coach David Hesch.
With the Bulls dropping their last three matches, the Bulls hope home turf will improve their play. "We have hit rock bottom," said Hesch. "We need to regroup and get our heads before we play Wednesday at home."
UB returns home to open a two-match string against Western New York opponents. The Bulls host Canisius on Wednesday, September 21 at 7:30 pm and Niagara on Friday, September 23 at 5:00 pm.
