Men's Soccer Ends in 1-1 Tie at Robert Morris

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA – The University at Buffalo and Robert Morris University played to a 1-1 tie in men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon. Both the Bulls and Colonials are now 1-0-1 in the 2011 season.
After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half, the Bulls broke through on the scoreboard in the 60th minute. Junior Maksym Kowal scored his first goal of the season as he took a short crossing pass from senior Andy Tiedt and fired the shot through traffic and past Robert Morris goalkeeper Toba Bolaji from 12 yards.
The Colonials, ranked third in the North Atlantic region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), quickly tied the contest in the 76th minute as Prince Samuels' breakaway beat UB keeper Jonathan Viscosi. It was the first goal allowed by the Bulls this season, a span of 166 minutes. Viscosi turned away another Samuels breakaway attempt in the 83rd minute to preserve the tie.
UB had a chance to win the game in regulation as the Bulls had a corner kick opportunity in the final minute. However, Anthony Johnson's header attempt with 24 seconds to play was stopped by Bolaji, who extended his left hand and corralled the ball one-handed forcing extra time.
The Bulls controlled the field in both 10-minute overtime sessions but were unable to crack the goal line. UB had a golden opportunity for the win in the 95th minute as shots by Patrick Ryan and Nate Woods were turned away by Bolaji. UB outshot Robert Morris 6-1 in the overtimes, including a 3-1 edge among shots on goal.
UB had the edge on the stat sheet as they outshot the Colonials, 23-13 and a 10-9 advantage on shots on goal. They also had nine corner kicks against RMU's four.
Viscosi stopped eight shots while Bolaji was credited with nine saves. Viscosi also had eight saves in his UB debut at St. Bonaventure on August 26.
"I thought we did enough to win," said interim head coach David Hesch. "We controlled most of the game and had some great opportunities to score. Defensively, we played great matching RMU's counter attacking style of play. One mistake in the back led to the RMU goal and that can't happen come conference play."
The Bulls travel to Detroit to face the Titans on Sunday, September 4 in their next action.
