ST. BONAVENTURE, NY – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team opened the 2011 campaign with a 3-0 shutout of host St. Bonaventure Friday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
UB scored a pair of first half goals to jump out to the early lead which they would not relinquish.
Senior Nate Woods opened the scoring in the 19th minute as his header following Anthony Johnson's throw in found the back of the net past St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Mitchell Mack.
The Bulls tacked on another marker before the halftime whistle when sophomore Richard Craven scored his first career goal in the 37th minute. Craven's shot from the top of the box was mishandled by Mack and trickled across the goal line.
Senior Andy Tiedt added an insurance goal in the 77th minute for the 3-0 victory.
Junior Jonathan Viscosi made his UB debut a memorable one with the shutout. Viscosi, who played the last two seasons at Rio Grande, stopped eight St. Bonaventure shots. The Bulls were outshot by the Bonnies, 16-7, with all three of UB's shots on goal finding the back of the net.
"The guys worked hard all preseason and the result of that showed this afternoon," said interim head coach Dave Hesch. "We did everything right today, especially Viscosi in net. He made some huge saves to keep us in there. That was great team win and I am proud of the boys and the coaching staff. Personally to be able to get my first win against my alma mater is a special feeling."
UB travels to Robert Morris on Wednesday, August 31 for their next match.
