BUFFALO, NY – Seven members of the University at Buffalo football team and head coach Jeff Quinn spent the day spreading the word about healthy choices and displaying football skills for over 400 summer campers at Western New York YMCA locations on Friday, July 22.
The Bulls, seniors Marcus Rivers, Peter Fardon, Josh Violanti, John Syty, Josh Copeland and sophomores Alex Neutz and Alex Zordich, talked to the campers about making smart and healthy choices to reach their goals. They stressed the importance of eating healthy, and getting out to play more often as well as listening to those who have their best interests at heart.
Head coach Jeff Quinn relayed how the YMCA's messages of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty echo the things he looks for while recruiting future Bulls. He stressed that those characteristics will allow the campers to reach their goals.
At each of the camps – Orchard Park, Lancaster, Ellicott-Masten and UB's South Campus – the Bulls players took the time to show off essential football skills of blocking, running, catching and throwing to the campers.
Despite the heat – temperatures above 90 degrees – the campers and players had another great day at YMCA Camp and each of the participants received autograph posters and a buy one, get one free ticket to a 2011 UB home football game.
"This is another part of our mission of being active among our Western New York neighbors through our Bulls in the Community program," said Quinn. "I'm really appreciative to our student-athletes to take the entire day to send a great message to the YMCA campers and am happy to assist an organization like the Y that does so much to promote and encourage strong kids and strong communities."
