
Three Bulls Named Academic All-MAC

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team placed a conference-high three players on the Academic All-MAC team, which the conference announced on Tuesday morning. MAC Player of the Year Kourtney Brown was one of two three-time Academic All-MAC selections, while seniors Jessica Fortman and Ashley Zuber were also named to the squad.
Brown, who is working on an electrical engineering degree after having already completed a degree in computer engineering with a 3.355 GPA, finished her brilliant playing career by leading the MAC in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots. Brown is the only player in the country in the top 10 nationally in those categories as she finished the season eighth in scoring, fifth in rebounding and blocked shots and sixth in field goal percentage.
For her career, Brown finished as UB's all-time leading scorer, rebounder and shot blocker. She had 1,995 points, 1,124 rebounds and 260 blocks, which broke the Mid-American Conference record. She finished second all-time in the MAC in rebounding and is amongst the top 15 scorers in league history despite never attempting a three pointer.
Fortman, who has a 3.57 GPA in biological sciences, became the 19th player in school history to go over the 1,000-point mark for her career. Fortman finished ninth in school history in scoring with 1,150 points and her 122 career games played are second in school history. The Ashland, KY native also finished in the top 10 in school history in three pointers, free throws, rebounding and blocked shots, which she is fourth in. She finished this past season averaging 8.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
Zuber has a 3.498 GPA and is in her first year of the physical therapy program at UB. Zuber finished her senior season as the conference leader in assists, setting a school record for assists in a season with 198. Healthy for the first time in almost two years, Zuber played in all 32 games, averaging 7.7 points and 6.2 assists per game. She had double figures in assists three times this past year, including a school-record 16 assists in one game. She has nine games of at least eight assists as well. Following UB's trip to the Women's Basketball Invitational, Zuber was named the MAC's Scholar Athlete of the Week.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
