Baseball Prepares for Three-Game Series With Delaware St.

DOVER, DE - The Bulls baseball team will stick a bit closer to home in its second weekend of the 2011 season, traveling to Dover for three games against Delaware State.
Buffalo went 0-4 last weekend against New Mexico State in a wild weekend that saw the two teams combine for 116 runs. It was not the batters that led to the four losses, but rather a pitching staff with newcomers still trying to find the right role. Lucky for the pitchers, the Buffalo offense is as strong as it has ever been, with five everyday starters batting .400 or better, led by leadoff ace Matt Pollock.
The super sophomore batted .583 with two doubles, six walks, a triple and a home run in just four games, just one of the many returning young players stepping up. Classmate Tom Murphy hit .571 with five doubles and six runs batted in. Jason Kanzler is the third of the sophomore class to erupt early on, with a double, seven runs scored and two stolen bases.
Delaware State is the polar opposite of the Bulls, as pitching has been a strength amidst a difficult early-season schedule. The Hornets have faced major programs like Minnesota, Georgetown and a three-game series with Arkansas, accumulating a 2-5 record along the way. The offense is spearheaded by Aaron Nardone and Cecil Cameron. Nardone leads the team with a .375 batting average, a home run and four runs batted in. Cameron has nine hits and a double while starting every game thus far.
The pitching staff is led by Jordan Elliot, who has a microscopic 0.64 earned run average through 14 innings, scattering nine hits along the way. Against the Razorbacks in the season opener, he gave up one run and struck out four through five innings. He followed it up by giving the team a six-hit complete game win over Towson for its first win of the season.
The three day series has been moved to two days due to poor weather forecasted for Sunday. First pitch in game one will be at 2:30 pm and there will be a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon. Live stats will be available through Delaware State's schedule page, found here.
