ORCHARD PARK, NY – The University at Buffalo football team began the first of their 15 spring practice sessions on Wednesday at the Buffalo Bills Fieldhouse with a spirited and focused practice that featured great passion on both sides of the ball.
The Bulls worked a fair amount on special teams, individual offensive and defensive drills as well as full team work that featured both running and passing drills. A few of the highlights of some of the team drills were several nice runs by tailbacks Jeffvon Gill, Branden Oliver and James Potts, an acrobatic interception by cornerback Romel Dismuke and a leaping reception for more than 40 yards by senior flanker Ed Young.
The intensity of the practice was focused and at a high pitch throughout the practice, something that head coach Jeff Quinn took note of. He feels that the Bulls have put last season behind them and are taking the steps necessary to compete for a MAC Championship.
"The focus the whole offseason has been on ourselves," said Quinn. "We went into this seven-week conditioning program to get bigger, get faster, get stronger and get smarter at the game of football. I felt for the first day we were all locked in and did some very, very good things and also some things we're going to have to clean up. For the first day and the first practice I felt good about their energy and their focus.
"They know what my expectations are what I've laid out for these young men and they know how to go about business when its time and how to help each other become the very best and to be able to compete and understand it's a we-for-we and us-for-us mentality here," said Quinn. "I feel very good about what we want to accomplish each and every day and that's been some time in the works."
Quinn was also extremely grateful to have the Bills Fieldhouse available to the team after Western New York was hit with several inches of snow Wednesday morning. The Bulls are scheduled to practice again this week on Friday and Saturday.
