CLEVELAND, OH - After tearing up the basepaths during a four-game series against Longwood, sophomore catcher Tom Murphy was named the Mid American Conference's East Division player of the week. He is the first Bull to earn the honor so far this season.
Murphy swung for the fences in the team's four-game weekend series at Longwood, hitting two home runs and adding two doubles while batting .467 and driving in seven runs. In a doubleheader Saturday, Murphy batted 5-8 to spark the offense, scoring four times and driving in three runs in each game. In the Sunday doubleheader, Murphy was a menace on the basepaths, stealing two bases in the team's 5-4 loss. For the weekend as a whole, the sophomore catcher stole three bases.
The West Monroe, NY native has a .458 on-base percentage with only four strikeouts in the first 11 games of the season. He is batting a team-best .390 with seven doubles, two home runs and 15 runs batted in. He has been a constant producer behind the plate as well, making 55 putouts with no errors, one of only two everyday starters to have a flawless fielding percentage.
The team will have five games this week, starting this afternoon with a single game against ACC foe North Carolina State at 2 pm. The team will then take on East Carolina tomorrow at 6 pm before playing three games against North Carolina Central on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
