LAS CRUCES, NM - The Buffalo Bulls offense met little resistance Sunday in its doubleheader against New Mexico State, but multiple errors and dominant hitting from the Aggies dropped the team in both afternoon games, 23-11 in game one and 19-13 in game two. The team scored 39 runs in the four-game series and batted .336 as a team, but will arrive back in Buffalo without a win.
Both games of the doubleheader were shootouts early, with neither pitching staff able to keep the opposition off the scoreboard. Jason Kanzler started off game one with a single and a steal, knocked home two batters later on an error. Jordan Camp's RBI single to left accounted for the team's other run in the first inning. Another two runs were plated in the second inning thanks to a Kanzler triple and an RBI double from Tom Murphy.
Kanzler, a sophomore from Penfield, NY, struck again for the third straight at-bat in the third inning, scoring two Bulls with a double following a run-scoring single from Matt Pollock. A run on a wild pitch scored the team's fourth run of the inning and put the score at 14-8 through the first three frames. The team's final three runs came in the fifth inning, keyed by a Pollock solo home run and two unearned runs. Starter Cameron Copping took the loss after giving up ten runs in two innings. Kanzler had a flawless game one, going 4-4 with four runs scored and three runs batted in.
In game two, it was off to the races yet again, with Buffalo and New Mexico State combining for 21 runs in the first three innings alone. Pollock picked up right where he left off in game one - where he went 2-3 with his first career home run - and led the game off with a triple. Camp drove him home with a double. Murphy singled to left immediately after to score Camp and Jamie Jiron and Alex Baldock each pitched in RBI singles before the inning's end.
The second inning was a wild affair, with Pollock reaching base with his third hit by pitch of the series. A wild pitch and a passed ball soon moved him to third base, and a passed-ball strikeout with Kanzler at the plate scored Pollock and moved Kanzler to first base safely. Camp followed with a two-run home run to put Buffalo up 7-5 moving in to the bottom of the second inning. New Mexico State scored nine unanswered runs before Buffalo scored again in the fifth inning when Pollock scored Baldock from second on a single to right center. Another run came in the sixth off yet another wild pitch from the Aggies hurlers.
In the seventh inning, pinch hitter Dan Scahill singled through the right side to score Andrew Smietana, who reached earlier on a single of his own. A double from Murphy scored Smietana and Pollock and moved to third before being gunned down attempting to steal home on a double steal with River McWilliams. One more single from Pollock scored a Buffalo run in the eighth ended the team's offensive output.
It was not the offense, but rather the defense, that doomed Buffalo to the series-capping loss to the Aggies. Six total errors led to eight unearned runs in the game. Starter Michael Burke took the loss after giving up eleven runs, seven earned. Senior Jeff Thompson pitched four innings of relief and struck out five.
After the dust settled out West, Buffalo now returns home with an 0-4 record. Next up with be three weekend games against Delaware State Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Hornets are currently 1-5.
