BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo football broadcast team will have a few new faces for the Bulls third season on WECK-1230 AM.
WIVB-TV weekend anchor Paul Peck will be back for his third straight season – and 11th season overall – of calling the action of UB football, while former All-Western New York quarterback Jim Kubiak will serve as color analyst and WECK evening talk show host Nick Mendola will provide commentary from the sidelines. WECK Sports Producer Brad Riter will once again anchor the broadcasts as the pre- and post-game host for the third consecutive season. Bulls games will also air in Rochester on WHTK (1280 AM and 107.3 FM).
Kubiak is no stranger to Western New York football fans. After a tremendous high school career at St. Francis High School, Kubiak was a three-year starter at the Naval Academy (1991-94). In his career, he set 22 school records and left as the school's all-time leader in passing yards (6,008) and pass completions (558), while throwing 23 touchdowns. After stints in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets, Kubiak had an extremely successful run as a starting quarterback in the Arena Football League, including with his hometown Buffalo Destroyers in 2001-02. As a rookie in the AFL, Kubiak finished the season 295-of-484 for 3,787 yards, 64 touchdowns and 15 interceptions with the Destroyers.
In 2003, Kubiak joined the Dallas Desperados and put together one of the best seasons in league history. He finished the season 388-of-557 for 4,762 yards, 97 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, all career-highs, while leading the top ranked offense in the league. His 4,762 passing yards and 69.7% completion percentage were each league records. For that season's performance, he earned Second-team All-Arena honors. Kubiak would go on to serve as both the Offensive Coordinator and Director of Football Operations for the Georgia Force before returning to his Western New York roots in 2009.
"I am very excited to be given this opportunity," said Kubiak. "The University at Buffalo has done a fantastic job of developing their football program into a Division I Mid-American Conference championship contender. It is a privilege to be part of an organization that has come so far in such a short time as well as to see the continued development of the Bulls under the dynamic leadership of new head coach Jeff Quinn. As a hometown guy, I've grown up following the Bulls, having the opportunity to work with Paul Peck and the broadcast team is something I am very much looking forward to."
Mendola, a UB graduate who is no stranger to Bulls' broadcasts after serving as play-by-play man for the Bulls' women's basketball team, will take on sideline duties for football games, while bringing fans insight into the players and coaches with pre-game and halftime features.
The Bulls will open the 2010 season on Thursday, September 2 when they host Rhode Island at 7 pm at UB Stadium. Tickets can be purchased online at buffalobulls.com or by calling 1-877-UB-THERE.
