COOKEVILLE, TN - The University at Buffalo baseball team split
Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against Tennessee Tech at
Bush Stadium. In the opener, the Bulls fell to the Golden Eagles,
12-6, despite a five-run sixth inning. In the nightcap, the Bulls
captured a 9-3 victory in seven innings off six RBIs by senior Brad Cochrane and a complete-game performance by senior Pierre Miville-Deschenes.
In the opener, the Bulls found themselves trailing the Golden
Eagles, 7-1, heading into the top of the sixth. Buffalo managed to
trim back Tennessee Tech's lead with five runs in the sixth
including a two-RBI double to left by freshman Alex Baldock. Off a
Golden Eagles' error, the Bulls managed to score a pair of
runs followed by an RBI double by junior David Neff.
In the remaining innings, the Golden Eagles pulled away for the
victory off five unanswered runs.
Starter Jesse Reinstein (0-1) recorded the loss in 3.0 innings of
work.
Neff went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and two walks followed by
Baldock with a pair of hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
The Bulls rebounded against the Golden Eagles in the seven-inning
nightcap, 9-3.
Following a pair of scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles scored the
first run to take a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Bulls went on the offensive to erase
the Golden Eagles' lead as Cochrane hit two-RBI single to
left field to take a 2-1 lead. With Cochrane positioned at third,
freshman Tom Murphy managed to reach base off a throwing error to
first from third, allowing Cochrane to score.
The Bulls kept the runs coming in the top of the fifth off a grand
slam to deep left field by Cochrane to take a 7-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Buffalo sealed the victory with a
two-RBI triple to right field by senior Adam Skonieczki.
Managing to add a score in the bottom of the seventh off a base
hit, Tennessee Tech's chances of a rally came too late as
their hopes vanished with a groundout to second and the Bulls
securing the 9-3 victory.
Cochrane recorded a career-high six RBIs off a pair of hits. Fellow
senior Rob Lawler also recorded a pair of hits including three
runs.
In the second complete game of his career, Miville-Deschenes (1-2)
struck out six batters while allowing only five hits.
The Bulls (6-6) will close out their weekend series against
Tennessee Tech on Sunday, March 14 with the first pitch set for
1:00 pm.
