KENT, OH – The University at Buffalo wrestling team
dropped eight of its 10 bouts, falling to 19th nationally-ranked
and conference opponent Kent State, 31-6, on Sunday afternoon at
the M.A.C. Center.
Despite opening the day with a decision at 125 by senior Dan Bishop, the Bulls (8-6-1, 1-2 MAC) were unable to stop the Golden
Flashes (13-3, 2-0 MAC). In Bishop's victory over Kent
State's Troy Opfer, the senior scored on a late third period
takedown to improve his MAC dual record to 3-0 for the season.
The Golden Flashes recorded victories in the next four bouts at
133, 141, 149 and 157 to earn 13 team points for a 13-3 lead.
In his first career MAC dual, redshirt freshman Chris Conti fell in
sudden victory, 7-5, off a takedown at 149. Conti led through the
first two periods, 5-3, before the Golden Flashes' Marcel
Clopton picked up a third period reversal to force overtime.
Sophomore John-Martin Cannon earned his 20th career dual
victory, defeating KSU's Ross Tice, 4-2. The 19th
nationally-ranked wrestler led Tice, 2-1 following the first period
off a double-leg takedown. With the score tied at 2-2 heading into
the third, Cannon collected a takedown with only 22 seconds
remaining on the clock for a 4-2 decision over Tice to trim back
the Golden Flashes' lead to 16-6. Cannon joins Bishop as the
only two Bulls to remain perfect in MAC competition at 3-0.
Kent State closed out the dual, scoring 15 unanswered points at
174, 184, 197 and 285 off their second set of four straight
victories.
The Bulls will host sixth nationally-ranked and conference opponent
Central Michigan on Sunday, February 14 at 1:00 pm.
