BUFFALO, NY - With a week off to rest up and prepare, the Buffalo wrestling team will set off for Happy Valley to face plenty of top competition at the Penn State Open Sunday, hosted by the Nittany Lions. Senior Jimmy Hamel is one of the wrestlers to watch this weekend as he inches ever closer to a historic mark.
Hamel, who currently has 97 career victories, will in all likelihood break the century mark before the end of the weekend and become the fifth Buffalo grappler to win 100 matches in their career, joining Kyle Cerminara (137 wins), Gary Cooper (113), Mark Budd (104) and Josh States (102).
It certainly won't be easy, though, as the Penn State Open boasts one of the deepest fields of any tournament in the area. The open features national top-25 teams such as Cornell, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Virginia and Lehigh along with MAC rivals Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Ohio and Kent State.
The Bulls will send 23 wrestlers to the Penn State Open, with a handful of others also participating in today's tournament at Niagara County Community College.
