BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team shot a season-high 60 percent from the field to dismantle Green Bay, 78-64, at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. It was Reggie Witherspoon's 150th win as head coach of the UB Bulls.
The Bulls' starting backcourt of Byron Mulkey and Zach Filzen each scored 21 points to help the Bulls improve to 6-3 on the season and 4-0 at home. Filzen tied a career high with five three-pointers.
Freshman Javon McCrea registered the third double-double of his young career with 13 points and 12 rebounds. He added a career-best five blocked shots.
Titus Robinson also reached double-figures with 10 points.
Down 12-8, the Bulls went on an 11-0 scoring run, capped by a Filzen three-pointer, to gain a 19-12 advantage. Buffalo held the Phoenix to 29 percent shooting in the first half and had a 32-25 lead at halftime.
Green Bay (4-6) opened the second half on a 7-2 scoring run to cut the Buffalo lead to 34-32. But the Bulls answered with a 14-0 scoring run, bookended by Filzen three-pointers, to take a 48-32 lead with 14:50 left in the game.
The UB lead would remain in double-digits until the 2:41 mark when Green Bay's Alec Brown sank a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 66-57. McCrea's rebound and putback at the other end put the Bulls back up 68-57 and the lead stayed in double-digits the rest of the way.
Buffalo has now won all four home games by double-digits.
"I thought they were going to go to the glass as hard as any team we've played and it was going to be a big challenge. I'm glad our guys responded pretty well to it," Witherspoon said. "We wanted to keep them from charging the basket offensive rebounds wise and off the dribble and I thought we did that."
Up next for the Bulls is Houghton College next Saturday at Alumni Arena. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 pm and admission to the game is free.
