WEST POINT, NY - After a few days to rest up, the Buffalo Bulls men's basketball team will take to the road again for the third of four straight road games Wednesday evening at West Point to face the Black Knights of Army. The team is currently 1-1 on this road trip after losing a nail biter to Indiana State last Saturday, 58-54.
The Bulls fought through foul troubles in the first half Saturday, with the home Sycamores in the bonus before the first half reached its midpoint. Junior guard Zach Filzen led the team in scoring for the third time this season, scoring seven in the first half alone. Senior point guard Byron Mulkey had another solid game distributing the ball, dishing out seven assists to only one turnover. Taking care of the ball has been one of Mulkey's strengths this season as he leads the team with 32 total assists and has a 3.56 assist-to-turnover ratio.
When scouting the Black Knights, it all begins with offense. Army boasts three players who average over thirteen points per game, with leading scorer Julian Simmons scoring 20.3 points per game. As a team, Army scores 73.8 points per game but it also gives up 70.2 points to its opponents, a number that bodes well for the Buffalo offense looking to rebound from a cold shooting afternoon at Indiana State.
The Black Knights have even more youth than Buffalo, with seven freshman and five sophomores on the roster. It will come into Wednesday night's game with a 4-2 record following a loss at Yale last Saturday. The loss snapped the team's three-game winning streak that included wins over NJIT, Bryant and Binghamton.
This will be Buffalo's first trip down to West Point since the 1976-77 season. The all-time series is all knotted up at 4-4, with the Bulls coming off a win last season in the first meeting since 1977. Sean Smiley scored 14 points in a 74-67 Buffalo win at Alumni Arena.
Tipoff is set for 7 pm at Christl Arena, with audio available from 1230 WECK.
