Swimmers Kickoff Season With Strong Performances at WNY Invite

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams rolled to 22 victories in 30 events as the Bulls hosted the WNY Invite on Saturday at the Alumni Arena Natatorium. There was no team scoring in the meet that also included men's and women's squads from Binghamton, Niagara, Canisius and St. Bonaventure.
Senior Jordan Deren won three distance freestyle events to lead the women's team on Saturday. Deren took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.44, the 500-yard freestyle in 5:11.43 and the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:32.03.
Winning two events each for the UB women were freshman Marissa Murphy and sophomore Karly Moore. Murphy took the 100-yard butterfly in 58.61 and won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:09.13. Moore swept a pair of sprint races, taking the 100-yard freestyle in 53.15 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.53.
Also taking first-place finishes in the women's competition were senior Jessie Koltz and juniors Brynn Marecki and Alie Schirmers. Koltz won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.34 while Marecki and Schirmers swept the breaststroke races. Marecki took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.43 and Schirmers claimed the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.97.
Moore, Murphy and Koltz were also part of both winning relays for the UB women. The three combined with Marecki to take the 200-yard medley relay in 1:48.71 and Deren for the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:38.37.
For the UB men, freshman Eric Culver swept the distance freestyles in his collegiate debut. Culver claimed the 500-yard freestyle in 4:45.13 and the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:45.39. Sophomores Josh Meints and Matt Schwippert also won a pair of races. Meints took both breaststrokes, winning the 100-yard distance in 59.78 and the 200-yard distance in 2:16.00. Schwippert won the backstroke events with times of 52.02 for the 100-yard race and 1:52.01 for the 200-yard race.
Sophomore Matt Hogan won the 100-yard freestyle in 47.37 while freshman Chris Waldock won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.20.
The Bulls also swept both men's relay races. Freshman Phil Aronica, Meints, Schwippert and junior Jared Heine won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.68 while Hogan, freshman Mike Dugan, Heine and junior Simon Proudfoot won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:26.06.
UB travels to Pittsburgh for a meet against the Panthers to open the dual meet season on Friday, October 15 at 4:00 pm.
