
Schwippert Wins MAC Scholar Athlete Honors

BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo men's swimmer Matt Schwippert has been named as the Mid-American Conference's Men's Scholar Athlete of the Week. The league announced its selections from its Cleveland headquarters on Friday.
Schwippert, a sophomore chemical engineering major with a 3.148 grade point average, won two individual events and a relay and had two second-place finishes at the season-opening WNY Invite on October 9. Schwippert swept the backstroke races, winning the 100-yard distance in 52.02 and the 200-yard race in 1:52.01. He placed second in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.32 and the 200-yard butterfly in 52.00. He swam the third leg of UB's winning 200-yard medley relay which finished in 1:33.68.
This is the second consecutive week that a UB athlete has been honored as the MAC's Male Scholar Athlete of the Week. Men's soccer goalkeeper Nick Fetterman won the award on October 8.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
