A new era in education began in Amherst in 1956 when Sweet Home High School opened its doors for the first time. 8 years later, another era began when the district named Bob Barczak the school's athletic director.
Over the next 25 years, the Panthers' athletic program became the envy of all high schools in Western New York, compiling a winning percentage of 72%, capturing 5 New York State championships and 10 regional titles.
The program was so dominant, it earned the Erie County Interscholastic Conference's Clarkson Trophy, (emblematic of overall athletic supremacy) 16 times.
Bob built a reputation of devotion, support, and encouragement to his students and coaches. The Panther football team now plays in Robert P. Barczak Stadium.
The 1983-1984 school year was especially impressive as the baseball and boys basketball teams both won state crowns and the volleyball team was in the midst of its national-record 292 match winning streak. The Buffalo News selected Sweet Home's year as the single greatest ever by a WNY high school.
Bob, who began his career as a Physical Education teacher at the Amherst school in 1961 and subsequently coached wrestling and football, was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 and has been a long-time supporter of UB and the football team.
