- As a UB student, Wal Blatter was a sports writer for both the Midnight Owl and Spectrum newspapers; he was instrumental in WBFO's original sports programming, becoming the station's 1st Sports Director; he called the play-by-play for basketball, baseball, and football from 1963-1967.
- A long-time season ticket holder, Wal is a staple at all home UB football and basketball games; he has provided financial support to UB Athletics philanthropically and corporately through his company, Castle Products.
- In 1994, he was appointed by President Bill Greiner to serve on the Blue & White Advisory Committee to assist the university in its transition to Division I.
- Additionally, Wal has provided resources to enable UB Athletic contests to be carried on TV, contributed funds to help defray the cost of the baseball field fencing, and provided other much-appreciated financial assistance allowing UB to host post-season basketball games.
