Dave Patenaude enters his second season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after engineering a tremendous offensive turnaround during the 2024 season.
The Bulls offense got better as the 2024 season progressed and was especially impressive in Mid-American Conference play. Buffalo was the top-scoring offense in MAC games, averaging 35.3 points per game. The Bulls averaged 43 points over the final four games of the regular season to lead all of FBS.
As a quarterbacks coach, he was a key figure in the development of C.J. Ogbonna. In his first season as the UB starter, Ogbonna threw for 2,381 yards and 19 touchdowns and rushed for 343 yards and eight touchdowns. His 19 touchdown passes ranked fifth in program history for a single season. He became the first UB quarterback since 2011 to throw for 2,000 yards and rush for 300 yards in the same season.
The Bulls went 9-4 in 2024 and defeated Liberty in the Bahamas Bowl.
Patenaude brought over 30 years of experience to UB, including a recent three-year stint as the offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech from 2019-21.
At Georgia Tech, Patenaude transformed an offense that ran a triple option before he was hired into spread offense. In 2020, Patenaude started three true freshmen on offense, including at quarterback, and saw an improvement of more than 100 yards per game in total offense from the previous season. Also in 2020, the offense had four-straight 400-yards games of total offense to begin the year for the first time since 2011.
Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Patenaude was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Temple from 2017-18. In his two years at Temple, the Owls had two of its top three single-season passing totals in school history and were the 23rd ranked scoring offense in the country in 2018.
Patenaude spent five seasons at Coastal Carolina as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, helping lead the Chanticleers to four playoff appearances in five years, including a trio of 10-win seasons.
Patenaude began his coaching career in 1991 as running backs coach at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and has coached at Springfield (1992-93), Fordham (1994-97), Columbia (1998-2001), New Haven (2002-03), Holy Cross (2004-06), Hofstra (2007-09) and Georgetown (2010-11). Patenaude was the head coach at New Haven for two years before spending three seasons at Holy Cross coaching the running backs, wide receivers and as special teams coordinator.
After a brief stint at Old Dominion in 2022 before having to step away for personal reasons, Patenaude most recently served as an offensive analyst at Virgina in 2023.
Patenaude was a three-year starter at quarterback and free safety at Central Connecticut State. He graduated from CCSU in 1990 and earned a master’s from Springfield in 1993.
He and his wife, Christine, have two daughters: Eva and Estelle.
