BUFFALO, NY – Kaleb Burgess won the match for true fourth place to qualify for the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena on the second day of the Mid-American Conference Championships. He was one of two Bulls to earn a spot on the podium as Sam Ewing finished fifth at 149.
Burgess opened his day by advancing to the third-place match at 157 by defeating Nick Stampoulos of Lock Haven, 4-2.
Unfortunately, he fell to George Mason's D.J. McGee in the third-place match. The redshirt-senior rebounded in his final match in Alumni Arena by earning a 5-4 decision over Central Michigan's Mason Schrader to earn his first trip to the NCAA Championships.
Ewing also had a shot to punch his ticket after placing fifth. The redshirt-sophomore earned a 4-2 decision over Central Michigan's Jimmy Nugent to win fifth place and then faced Ryan Michaels of Edinboro in the true fourth match. Unfortunately, he dropped an 8-1 decision to Michaels.
Ewing started his day by pinning Bloomsburg's Alec Baxley in just 42 seconds to advance to the consolation semifinals. He would drop his next match to Rider's Dylan Layton by decision.
Earlier in the day, Tyler Roark (141) and Magnus Bibla (285) dropped their first consolation bouts of the day.
Burgess will now advance to the NCAA Championships in Cleveland beginning March 19.
